The First Amendment is the most widely known Amendment in the Bill of Rights. The First Amendment is widely considered to be the most important part of the Bill of Rights. This amendment guarantees freedoms that are essential to democracy. The First Amendment protects five of the most basic liberties:

  • freedom of religion
  • freedom of speech
  • freedom of the press
  • freedom of assembly
  • and freedom to petition the government to right wrongs.

Definition of COMMENTARY

  • an explanatory treatise
  • a record of events usually written by a participant
  • a systematic series of explanations or interpretations (as of a writing)
  • something that serves for illustration or explanation
  • an expression of opinions or offering of explanations
  • explanations about an event or situation
  • a set of explanatory or critical notes on a text.

Definition of OPINION

  • a view, judgment, or appraisal formed in the mind about a matter
  • belief stronger than impression and less strong than positive knowledge
  • a generally held view
  • an estimation of the quality or worth of someone or something

Definition of FAIR USE

  • Fair use is a legal doctrine that promotes freedom of expression by permitting the unlicensed use of copyright-protected works in certain circumstances. Examples of fair use in United States copyright law include but not limited to, commentary, such as to comment upon, parody, criticism and news reporting.

Definition of PUBLIC FIGURE / PUBLIC OFFICIAL

  • a public official or any other person pervasively involved in public affairs
  • a public official is a government employee who has, or appears to the public to have, a significant role in the business of government and public affairs
  • candidates for public office and people who have achieved pervasive fame or notoriety
  • in Kansas, anyone who acts in an official capacity, by virtue of his or her public service as a government official. Elected or appointed is considered a public figure.

Definition of PUBLIC DOCUMENT

  • A public document is one that is or should legally be readily available for inspection by the public, as a document issued by Congress or a governmental department.
  • Any document or record, evidencing or connected with the public business or the administration of public affairs, preserved in or issued by any department of the government.
